Gemayel Submits Draft Law Proposing Decriminalization of Adultery

Kataeb leader Samy Gemayel submitted Tuesday a draft law proposing the decriminalization of adultery in Lebanon's Penal Code in a bid to establish equality between men and women.

The draft law, presented on the International Women's Day, points out that laws related to adultery make it easy for men to file lawsuits against their wives and imprison them, whereas women cannot do the same given Lebanon's patriarchal society.

The proposed legislation also demanded that adultery be regarded as a reason to file a divorce, not a crime stipulated by the Penal Code.

The decriminalization of adultery won't mean the legalization of the act, the draft law clarifies, but it would be mainly aimed at removing the relevant provisions from criminal law and putting it under Personal Status laws.
